About Burwell Engineers
At Burwell Engineers, we combine traditional engineering expertise with a passion for preserving Britain's industrial heritage. Operating from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, and Ulverston, Cumbria, we provide specialist engineering services across the textile, steam, maritime, and heritage sectors.
Our experienced team offers a comprehensive range of services, including emergency call-outs, planned preventative maintenance, machinery servicing, loom and carding engine repairs, boiler maintenance, plumbing, basic building maintenance, and skilled engineering crew hire. We understand the importance of reliability, efficiency, and attention to detail, and we pride ourselves on delivering high-quality workmanship tailored to the needs of every client.
Alongside our engineering services, we are actively involved in the restoration and preservation of historic industrial machinery and sites. We currently operate our workshop at the historic Backbarrow Iron Works in Cumbria, where we are undertaking the restoration and redevelopment of this significant industrial landmark. As part of the project, we are installing and restoring electrical systems throughout the site, including lighting and infrastructure, helping to bring the works back to life while preserving its unique character.
A key part of this restoration is the conservation of the last remaining Edgar Allen Horizontal Steam Blowing Engine, a remarkable piece of British engineering history. Our team is carefully restoring this rare machine to ensure its preservation for future generations and to celebrate the craftsmanship and innovation of the Victorian era.
We are also proud custodians of a collection of Victorian Joseph Arnfield Pelton Wheels, which we continue to restore and preserve. These historic water turbines represent an important chapter in industrial development, and our ongoing work helps safeguard their legacy while showcasing the engineering achievements of the past.
Our engineers bring extensive experience from the textile industry, maritime engineering, and heritage steam operations. We have worked with respected organisations including the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, where we service heritage textile machinery, and the National Trust, carrying out specialist boiler work. Our team has also been involved with the operation of the Steam Yacht Gondola on Coniston Water and has undertaken pipefitting, textile machinery installation, and carding engine projects for organisations such as Gardiner Yarns in Huddersfield.
Whether supporting modern industrial operations, maintaining heritage machinery, or restoring historic engineering landmarks, Burwell Engineers is committed to delivering dependable, professional engineering solutions while preserving the industrial heritage that inspires our work.
